How do you handle people who "don't get it".....

I have lost many pets in my lifetime and each time have been very devistated. I know that there are alot of people out there who don't understand how we feel and say things like "its only a dog or cat etc". How do you handle these people? I know there are a few things I'd like to tell them..... Sometimes I try to explain to them that I love my animals as one of my family other times I just ignore them. Just wondering how everyone else feels about this.

Hi Carol. All I can say is 'I hear you!' I have 2 beautiful German Shepherds & they are my fur kids. I have been told that I am too 'over the top' when it comes to my dogs & I should get a life. People keep asking me when Im going to have kids - well I can't - so what am I supposed to do? - where I am concerned the buck stops with my dogs. Neo & Sasha are a big big part of my world & when the time comes for them to go to a better place I know I will be absolutely devastated. They way I see it is if people can't understand then they don't have that special something, that compassionate heart that true animal owners have & I feel sorry for their pets - they are missing the whole point of what having a pet is all about. They look at me like I'm stupid & there is no reasoning with ignorance. You do what you feel is right, there should be more people like you in the world & don't worry about what people say - they can't be too intelligent if they think a dog is 'only a dog'.
