A letter to our dearest friends

Dear Dog and Cat,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two of you in the way.

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. (Please note: placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.)

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort! Look at videos of dogs and cats sleeping. They can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. (I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but sarcasm.)

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. (In addition, I have been using the bathroom for years...canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.)

The proper order is to kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cats' butt. I cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.

To pacify you, I have posted the following message on our front door...

Rules for Non-Pet owners who visit & complain about our pets:

1. They live here, you don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.

3. I like my pet better than I like most people.

4. To you it's an animal. To me, he or she is an adopted son or daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and is speech challenged.

Dogs and cats are more than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't drink or smoke, don't worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if they get pregnant you can sell the results.

You really hit the nail on the head. When I go to bed the dog is back to back with me and the cat is curled up in front and the bedding is pulled so tight over me I can't even move. BUT they are so comfortable, sleeping so good ............

This has got to be one of the greatest things I have ever read when it comes to our babies. Although I do love the poem called over the rainbow Bridge (makes me cry every time I read it) The bed, steps, food bowls, and of course the bathroom...my cats think they belong in there with me. Of all the things they do....I feel I get more respect from my 8 babies then I do from my 2 teenager daughters. All they want from us is love, shelter and food and an occastional snack every now and then, and chasing a ball around...Thanks for sharing

And my son is jealous of the cats and dogs! He says I think more of them than I do my grandson because I refuse to allow my grandson to get near my animals anymore because he is rough with them and he hurts them. My son is really mad at me over that but, I'm sorry, that kid will not come in my house again until he learns to avoid my animals at all costs. He is 17 and should know better than to pick the dogs up by their paws, for crying out loud!! My son wants me to let my grandson live with me!! He's the one who is crazy, not me! My animals ARE more important to me! My grandson is my kid's responsibility, not mine and my kid is 38 years old and not my responsibility any longer, either! The health and welfare of my animals is my responsibility. GRRRRRRR this just brought all that back to mind! Sorry, but I needed a place to vent...

Venting is a good thing!! It sounds to me like you have your priorities in order. At the age of 17 I would say what he does is abuse...not lack of knowing any better. Shame on him...good for you! Stick to your guns Anni.

so true when go to bed Lizzy curls up in between my legs and Mr T lies on my feet its hot in summer but love them to bits so i don't disturb them
